As a modern human, I’m inclined to romanticize nature as an Eden-like realm, gentle and magnanimous, rich with life and living. In truth, nature does not want me there in my hiking boots and Kevlar. She would prefer me shoeless and aware of the sting of nettle on my skin. Nature is difficult. I know this, yet I cling to a vision of comfort, as if a field of wildflowers is somehow more sacred than a field of bituminous asphalt.
